You Cannot Not Communicate

You Cannot Not Communicate

It's pretty apparent that when we speak, we are communicating. What's interesting is that EVERYTHING you do is "read" as communication by other people around you. Back in the 1970's they did some research and discovered that more than 70% of your communication is actually non-verbal. We unconsciously pick up on subtle nuances of other peoples posture, their gestures, how they are standing or sitting, the tone of their voice, the quality of their voice to name but a few. Now, that's not to say that words we use aren't important, because they are. It's just that there is an enormous amount of information available to us in every interaction that we may be missing.

Remember that in NLP we very much believe that the mind and body are connected and this was proven in Dr Deepak Chopra's book "Quantum Healing." So because of the mind-body connection our thought have an impact on our physiology, so unconsciously we are "leaking" non-verbal communication all the time.

Therefore you cannot not communicate - so it's critical that you communicate as clearly and as accurately as you can, rather than leaving it to chance. Here's an example, imagine that you are in a team meeting at work and a disagreement errupts between two of your co-workers. Whatever you say or whatever actions you take may be taken as an indicator of which side of the argument you have taken and who you are supporting or that you have a neutral stand point. If you want to remain neutral you need to make sure the verbal and non-verbal ways that you are communicating are as aligned and congruent as possible.
