The Truth About Change
The Truth About Change
Have you noticed yet, that for some people and indeed organisations change appears to be very easy, almost effortless. They easily adapt to the changing conditions and can think and behave in new ways to improve their results. However, you may know individuals and companies who find change a challenge, they like to do things "because we've always done it this way" - but the question is...does that get you the results that you really want?
Change is interesting - how easy is it for individuals or organisations to change? Do you find it easy to change? The truth is there are 3 categories of change - which one best describes you or your organisation?
1. Open
This is where the person or the company wants to change. They are interested in discovering and using new strategies, skills, values and behaviours to deal with the complex issues they face in their reality and/or environment. This is the type of person who wants to change their limiting beliefs, let go of the emotional baggage from the past, resolve internal conflicts because they want to move forward in life. As a Coach individuals and businesses who are open to change are great to work with as they are actively looking for "how to" progress and develop their thinking to become more flexible in their communication and behaviour to get the very best results that they can.
2. Arrested
Change becomes more difficult if the individual or business is at this stage because there will be a reluctance or maybe resistance to creating change. This is the business owner who is fighting to do things the same way but not getting the results they want. You might even hear them say, "I want to want to change but I'm not sure I want to change" - it can be quite a conflicting place to be in. As a Coach, if you working with businesses or people who are at the stage, then often you can assist them to become Open to change by reframing their "reasons". That means you can create a plan for making a transition which can be at a pace which suits the individual or the business.
3. Closed
This is where change is extremely difficult to accept. This is the client who says, "I can't do that because that's not me." This is the type of thinking which keeps the problem in place. So as a Coach you may give the company or the person new coping mechanisms, new strategies and resources to deal with the situation but it's highly likely without the Client creating change within their thinking, they will prefer to go back to their old ways of behaving. This is the Client who is entrenched in their "gray zone" - they know the bits of their life that work and the bits of their life that don't work - but their is no real drive or motivation to create change.
